Samosa 101: Things to Know about the Favorite Indian Snack

SUHEL AHMED • 26 May 2022

Samosas are one of the most popular and iconic Indian foods in the world. They can be your appetiser before a hearty meal or your snack throughout the day. Do you want to learn more about these small triangles of delight? Keep on reading to learn more.

What Are Samosas?

Samosas are fried triangular pastries or dumplings with vegetable or meat filling. They are closely related to the Greek spanakopita and the Italian calzone. Samosas are a product of Indian cuisine, and they are one of the most popular snack foods in the Indian subcontinent. They are also quite popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

What Are the Different Ways to Enjoy Samosas?

You can enjoy samosas in a variety of ways. Here are the three of the most common ways.

1. Samosa Wrap

A samosa wrap is a very simple way to enjoy a samosa. It is basically a tortilla that is filled with your favourite samosa filling. You may also top it with other ingredients like diced onions and tomatoes.

2. Samosa Chaat

Samosa chaat is a favourite Indian street snack. It is made by frying samosas until they are crisp and then adding sauces like tamarind, cayenne pepper, and potatoes. You can also top it with yoghurt and shredded papad (or lentil biscuits).

3. Samosa Pav

Samosa Pav is popular Indian street food, with a similar feel to the standard burger. It is prepared by topping a burger bun with your favourite samosa filling and sauces.

How Can You Create Samosas at Home?

1. Prepare the Pastry

Start by adding your flour, salt, oil, and water to a bowl. Start by adding water to the mix and kneading it until the dough is soft and pliable. Now, let the dough rest for about an hour. Once the dough is rested, divide it into four equal parts. Roll each piece individually into a flat, circular piece. Apply butter to the edges of the dough and bring two opposite edges together. Press them together, and then, starting from the top, roll the dough a bit. Repeat this step until you have completely rolled the dough.

2. Prepare the Filling

While the dough rests, you may prepare the filling. You may use potatoes, peas, carrots, and mushrooms for vegetable fillings. Then, feel free to add minced chicken, ground lamb, or minced beef for meat fillings. Lastly, offer a unique flavourr through minced pineapple, potatoes, carrots, and peas.

3. Prepare the Sauce

If you are not using store-bought samosa pastries, you need first to steam the samosa. Then, you need to make the sauce. You may make the sauce for vegetable pastries by mixing chopped tomatoes, onions, coriander, minced ginger, and green chillies. The meat pastries are usually cooked in a sauce made from yoghurt, water, and minced ginger.

4. Cook the Samosas

Now, you are ready to cook the samosas. Start by heating oil in a pan until the oil is hot. You can now add the samosas and fry them until golden brown.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know more about samosas, you can try them for yourself. You can make them at home or buy them from your favourite local Indian restaurant.
