Indian Dining: Making the Most Out of the Experience—a Guide

1 October 2020

This is a subtitle for your new post

Every cuisine has its own unique way of celebrating food. There are traditions and rituals followed at each stage, from the sourcing to the preparation, on to the cooking, and of course, to the serving and eating. Part of what makes a dining experience as authentic as possible is the observance of such traditions that are so important with certain cuisines.

One of the cuisines that just keeps on gaining popularity is the flavorful spice of India. This country's rich history greatly influenced its cuisine—and so too, the traditions associated with it.

Here are some things to keep in mind when dining in at any Indian restaurant to give you the best experience possible:

Eat with your hands

Some people might be uncomfortable with the idea of handling food with their bare hands instead of using cutlery. But this is the best way to enjoy your food at an Indian restaurant—and it is perfectly normal and respectable.

Considering how Indian food is prepared and presented, the easiest way to eat is really with your hands! Imagine cutting up your chapati with a knife and fork—it would take ages! Plus, they say that food tastes better when you eat it with your hands, so go ahead and rip off that bread to scoop up some of that deliciously spiced chickpeas.

Learn the basic items on the menu

People will often order a "chai tea" or some "naan bread." While these are not inappropriate, calling these dishes in such a manner are repetitive, as they technically mean "tea tea" or "bread bread."

Knowing that can save you and your server from potential embarrassment!

Don't stay in your comfort zone

It might be tempting to stick with your favourites when eating Indian, but there are so many more scrumptious options on the menu that are waiting to be tasted. After all, trying out different cuisines is about being adventurous and trying new things!

Don't be limited by what you might not know. If you're feeling a little lost, ask the server which type of flatbread goes best with other dishes. You may discover paratha, which is a flakier flatbread, or roti, a thinner and chewier variant. You can also ask which dessert is more appropriate to follow the meal you've just had. Everyone loves their gulab jamun, but kulfi and barfi are also to die for.

Always get appetisers

Since we're on the topic of breaking comfort zones for food, one great way to do this and sample different tastes from the menu is to order appetisers. This way, you won't have to commit to dishes that you don't fancy. They also help prepare your tastebuds for the heap of dishes to come! And, as always, these are great for sharing!

Share your food

Are you ordering an entrée for yourself? You're totally missing out!

Because Indian food varies so much, it's best when shared—especially with loved ones. Often, you'll find families at tables sharing food with one another. This way, you'll get to taste a lot more than just your individual order. Kind of a great workaround for the buffet, if you ask us!

Conclusion

Enjoying a new restaurant and cuisine just isn't as complete without the little details that make the experience so much more enjoyable. It’s not just about what you eat, but how you eat it, and most importantly, who you eat it with.
